Something New is Born

One of the key points of my work is the actual shaping of the acoustic moment itself. How can I use and mold sound in the most subtle way to make any chosen setting distinct? My attempts to address this question have led me to my most recent occupation: the creation of sound sculptures. How does the viewing of a sculpture change once the sculpture emanates sounds? Does that make the sound sculptural, i.e. visually and spatially tangible, or does the sculpture become dematerialized because it changes over time?

I first create the sound sculpture on the computer and then transfer the shape onto a core by using relief technique. I carve the actual final shape out of the core, then proceed to coat it with a glass fibre mat and epoxy resin to get a negative mold.  This mold produces the definite shape, which is holllow and makes it an ideal sound box. I then use a specially designed loudspeaker to get the entire shape to vibrate.

Each sculpture has its own sound which is specifically attuned to its shape. Therefore, the act of looking at the sculpture in its chosen setting creates a new dimension of experience.

The sound samples are clips taken from a loop. All the sounds on the following pages will be played on the computer's audio system. However, this will not recreate the live listening experience of standing near the actual sculpture. The sound is activated by spatial triggers and fades out once all the visitors have stepped outside of the sculpture's defined radius. In addition, the sound may also be adjusted interactively on request
